South Africa Investment Conference

5 – 7 November 2019
Sandton, Johannesburg

The inaugural South African Investment Conference in October 2018 saw 1,500 delegates from South Africa and across the world gathering in Sandton, Johannesburg to discuss investment opportunities in Africa’s most advanced economy. Over $20bn of investment commitments were made at the event, as leaders from business, government, and the investment community forged relationships and explored ways to reignite growth in South Africa.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is pleased to announce that the second South African Investment Conference will take place in Sandton from 5 to 7 November 2019. Building on the success of the inaugural conference, it will provide an opportunity to find out about the country’s abundant investment opportunities in a host of dynamic sectors, and to engage directly with the country’s business and political leaders. The South African Consulate General in New York hosted a business delegation of 18 SA fresh produce, dried fruit & nuts, and processed food exporters to New York City, New Jersey and Philadelphia from 10 – 16 October 2019. The delegation was led by Ms. Janice Jonathan, Mr. Edwin Moloto and Ms. Rosina Nkosi of the TISA-Trade and Investment South Africa division of the DTI.  SA companies represented were: Alvarita, Mamusa Marketing, Vinglo, Bayede Marketing, The Grape Company, Lona Citrus, Pitto, Lentibex, Rickety Bridge Wines, Cape Honeybush Tea, Herbivore Earthfoods, Mardouw Olive Estate, Chill-E, Collateral Trading/Bridge of Hope Wines, Yamama Gemmer /RM Catering Svcs, Tweeter Quail Products, and Coti Chocolates who was accompanied by Ms. Linda Lubengu  Eastern Cape Development Corp.  

The delegation met with potential importers, distributors, and retailers around New York City. Their program included site visits and tours of the Hunts Point/NYC  Produce Market, the Philadelphia Wholesale Produce Market, Holt Terminal/Port of Philadelphia. Acting Consul General, Gavin du Preez accompanied the delegation on a special visit to the Port of Wilmington, Delaware now being managed by Gulftainer. In addition, the group also went on retail tours around New York City and the City of Philadelphia. Specialty food stores visited were Wholefoods, Trader Joe’s, Perelandra, Sahadi’s, Eastaly’s, Wegman’s, Sprouts Farmers Market. A special meeting and visit was arranged with the Fairway Market at the corporate offices and store in Harlem.

The South African Consulate General also hosted a Welcome Briefing and Market Intelligence workshop for the delegation in partnership with Mr. Leonardo Natale of US Import Agent, Inc. and Mr. Cristiano Villani and Mr. Eugenio Perrier of Bravo International, Inc. who gave a presentation on the US Food Distribution and Opportunities for International companies in the US Specialty Food and Beverage industry. This session as followed by one-on-one meetings with importers and distributors at the SA Consulate.

The mission commenced with the participation of the processed food and beverage companies at the Food Network’s New York City Wine & Food Festival held at Pier 94 and concluded at PMA Fresh Summit to be held at Anaheim, California for the eight (8) fresh produce and dried fruit & nuts exporters. This portion of the trade mission will be facilitated by the SA Embassy in Washington DC, the SACG offices in Chicago & Los Angeles.

Africa Pavilion to Feature 25 Firms at 2019 Summer Fancy Food Show

With support from the South African Consulate-General, 25 specialty food producers from seven Southern African countries are set to participate in the June 23-25 Summer Fancy Food (SFF) show in New York City, where they will represent the continent as part of a dedicated Africa Fine Foods Pavilion. Co-sponsored by the Cape Town-based tourism, trade, and investment promotion agency Wesgro as well as Durban-based Trade and Investment Kwa-Zulu Natal (TIKZN), the pavilion was designed with support from the USAID Southern Africa Trade and Investment Hub. Read more.
