South African boat builders
successfully weather the storm
As the world licks its wounds from a recession
that brought many an industry to its knees, the South African Boating
fraternity is rallying strongly towards a brighter future. The sector, like
many others, was severely affected by the economic downturn, particularly on
the export front, as previously lucrative markets such as the USA weakened
drastically in terms of buying power. However, there are promising signs of
an upswing, and the industry is determined to make a full and spectacular
recovery, starting with a strong showing at this year’s Strictly Sail Miami
Boat Show.
This year marks South Africa’s 5th consecutive
year at the event, one of the world’s most prominent showcases for the
international boatbuilding industry.
And this year, 4 determined boatbuilding
companies, spearheaded by the South African Boatbuilding Export Council (SABBEX),
hope to maintain a strong showing at the event. Represented at this year’s
event will be The Knysna Yacht Company, Afri-Cat Marine, Royal Cape
Catamarans and Cruiser Cats, a first time exhibitor in Miami.
