Visiting Professors or Academics Visiting South Africa for Sabbaticals

Important: Foreigners intending to visit South Africa are hereby informed that their passports must have at least one blank visa page for the purpose of endorsement. The blank page needed for endorsement purposes excludes pages in a passport reserved for observations and amendments.

  • Visa application form

  • A valid passport in respect of the applicant.

  • Two (2) passport photos

  • Yellow fever certificate if the applicant will be traveling, intends to travel or traveled from or through the yellow fever endemic area.

  • In respect of minor dependent children accompanying the applicant or joining the applicant in the Republic, proof of such guardianship or custody will be needed. In the case of unaccompanied minor, consent from the guardian.

  • Letter from host organization in South Africa confirming the visit, duration and also the duties of the academic concerned while in South Africa.
  • Letter from institution the applicant is attached to – abroad, detailing the visit and also its purpose.
  • Flight itinerary

  • Visa fee of US $72.00 / Canadian $ 79.00 (Please see below).
  • Deposit of US$800.00
  • Mailing fee of US $16.00 / Canadian (Please see below).

Payment must be in the form of cash or money order.

In the United States

  • If you are applying in our Los Angeles, Chicago or New York office, please make the check payable to the South African Consulate General
  • If you are applying in our Washington office, please make the check payable to the South African Embassy.

    US Mailing Fee: US $16.00

Canada

  • If you are applying in our Canadian office, please make the check payable to the South African High Commission.

Processing Fee: Canadian $79.00
Deposit: Please call the South African High Commission.
Canadian Mailing Fee: Please call the South African High Commission in Canada at (613) 744-0330.

*NB: Applicants visiting South Africa for a period of twelve (12) months and more will have to provide a police clearance certificate from the State Police concerned – in the case of the United States citizens, where they have lived for a period of 12 months or more. In case of applicants who have lived in other countries for a period of 12 months and more, a police clearance certificate will be needed from  that country.
