Persons born abroad to South African parents may avail of South African citizenship by descent through birth registration.

Requirements

  • A duly completed Form BI-24, Notice of Birth, completed in black ink and signed by the father of the child being registered.  If the parents are not married and the child is taking the father's surname, the father must acknowledge paternity by signing on the lower left hand corner of the form. The mother is also required to give her consent for this by countersigning the form. Without these, the child will automatically be registered using the mother's surname.

  • A duly completed form BI 529E, Determination of South African Citizenship, to be completed and signed by the South African parent of the child being registered. In the event that both parents are South African citizens, the father must complete the form.  Please note that this form must contain the South African parent's information and not the child being registered.

  • An original or notarized copy of the child's foreign birth certificate

  • An original or notarized copy of the parent's marriage certificate

  • An original or notarized copies of the South African parent's proof of South African citizenship e.g. birth certificate or identity document or valid passport.

  • A notarized letter of consent from the child's mother giving her full consent for the child's birth to be registered in South Africa

  • An administrative fee of $2.00 and mailing fee of $3.00 in cash or money order made payable to the South African Mission. No personal checks will be accepted.

Birth registrations are processed and finalized in South Africa therefore requires a processing period of 4 months.

As soon as the application is finalized an abridged birth certificate will be mailed to the applicant upon the receipt of which, applicant may now apply for his/her passport and full birth certificate.

Kindly note that children born abroad are automatically allowed to maintain dual citizenship until the age of 18.  At 18, to enable him/her to retain his/her South African citizenship, he/she must apply for Exemption in terms of Section (9)(2) of the South African Citizenship Act, Permission to make use of a passport of another country.
