Royal Cape Yacht Club, Cape Town, South Africa is proud to announce it's entry in the prestigious New York Yacht Club Invitational Regatta to be held in Newport, Rhode Island, from Monday 12 September to Saturday 17 September 2011.

Royal Cape Yacht Club

This highly competitive regatta, presented by Rolex, has attracted 22 entries from 15 countries on 6 continents and represents the top Yacht Clubs from around the world.   It will be sailed on identical Swan 42 designed yachts supplied by NYYC and crewed by Corinthian (non-professional) sailors only.

“This invitation is a great honour for our Club, Royal Cape Yacht Club and for South Africa” said Commodore, John Martin.

“Newport, RI has great memories for me,” said Martin.  “During my single- and double-handed sailing career, 1981–1991, I had the honor of winning a few races, most importantly, winning the last leg of the 1986/87 BOC Singlehanded Round the World Race which finished in Newport.  It is with great delight that I return with a very competent and competitive sailing team to represent the club of which I have been Commodore for the past three years.”

“The Team of seasoned sailors who have achieved internationally, have, we believe, an excellent chance of a podium finish and include skipper Dave Hudson, an Olympic Campaigner and one of our finest South African yachtsmen”.   “We are also very pleased to announce that Wadi Xayimpi, one of our stars from the Izivunguvungu Sailing Development School has been included in the Team to race against the distinguished line-up of International Clubs.   Izivunguvungu is an outreach programme based in Cape Town, dedicated to developing previously disadvantaged youth in sailing, empowering them with sailing and maritime skills”.

African Access Holdings, a wholly owned Black Empowerment Company in South Africa have lent their financial support to give Wadi Xayimpi the opportunity to join the Team in the U.S. and participate in this great event.

Said Martin :-

“ We are delighted to welcome African Access aboard for this distinctive regatta and thank CEO, Mr. Shaun Battlemann for acknowledging the work we at Royal Cape Yacht Club and Izivunguvungu are doing for Youth Development Sailing and transformation in this sport”.

“Their gesture epitomizes how, since 1994, we have grown together not only in this Sport, but in our country and we shall utilize this opportunity to the maximum to market our country internationally”.

Mr. Battlemann and his co-directors will be joining the Team in Newport Rhode Island and will utilize the opportunity to network with businessmen both in Newport, RI  and New York City.

An official practice for the 22 yacht club teams will take place on Monday, September 12, from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm, followed by the opening ceremony for the Invitational Cup.  Five days of racing will ensue, with the first warning signal scheduled for 11:00 am each day.  The winning team will be confirmed at the conclusion of racing on Saturday, September 17.
